Asbestos Register – What Is It?
An asbestos register is a document or chart that presents the details regarding if any asbestos is present within a building, where asbestos is located, risk assessment and identify which materials contain asbestos.
When a workplace building is suspected to have asbestos or has been inspected and found to contain asbestos, or was built before the 31st of December 2003, having an asbestos register is a legal requirement. The Work Health and Safety Regulation also requires the register to be periodically updated whenever any building work is done. It should also be incorporated into the AMP or asbestos management plan.
Why Is The Register Important?
The register is required to ensure that the occupants of the workplace or building are aware of the location of the asbestos presence and the risk rating that has been provided for safety reasons. It also makes it easier to prioritise when there is a removal process or any demolition or renovation work is to be done.
How To Get A Register?
To have a register, a thorough asbestos inspection must be conducted by expert asbestos inspectors or environmental consultants. As they conduct their inspection, any samples they collect will be sent to an accredited lab for testing.
The results will be delivered as an asbestos report. It contains all the details of the inspection and the findings. A register can then be created based on the data presented in the report by the consultants.
Asbestos exposure can be very dangerous to one’s health, and it is critically important to know if there is any asbestos present within the workplace, where it is, and how much risk it poses.
